Artist Bio: WILLIAM CHURCHILL

William Churchill Jr. - Realistic sculptor in wood with emphasis on Native American, western and wildlife subject matter. Bill's primary goal is to produce lasting wood sculptures, which honors the natural beauty of wood. His guiding discipline is...the art should not conceal the natural beauty of wood, and the wood should not overpower the art. Following this discipline, Bill's artwork has achieved noteworthy success. His artwork is in prestigious collections around the world and he has been featured in magazines such as; Art & Antiques, Art of the West, Art-Talk, Cowboys and Indians, Western Horseman, Fine Wood Working, Wood Carving Illustrated, and others related to western or wood art. A photo of one of Bill's pieces now hangs in the National Broadcaster's Hall of fame.

Art studies include High School and College; classes by professional artists at the Scottsdale Artist's School in Scottsdale, Arizona; field trips in Korea and Japan; and various correspondence classes. However, Bill is self taught in the art of power-carving. With respect to the care and preservation of wood, he utilizes the Smithsonian Museum research and published findings which explained how wood carvings with an ancient mixture of wax and Boiled Linseed oil can last thousands of years. Subsequently, the finish on all of Bill's work incorporates this ancient formula. Bill explains, "If wood statues carved by the Egyptians can last six thousand years, their wood finishing process is good enough for me."

Artistic awards and accomplishments include the 2003 Olef Wieghorst Award; 4 People's Choice Awards; 17 Best of Show; 55 First Place Blue Ribbons; and 3 Sponsor's Choice Awards. Bill has been the featured artist at five art shows and guest speaker to four art groups. He is represented by eight fine art galleries in six states and is a member of the California Art Club, the California Carver's Guild, and the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association. In 2002, Bill was inducted into the Mountain Oyster Club as Honorary Artist Life Member.
