Artist Bio: JUAN ARCHULETA
Juan Archuleta's early years were influenced by being raised on his grandparent's farm in Louisiana. Inspired by the beauty and moods of the woods surrounding the family homestead, young Archuleta loved to pass the hours away drawing what views he saw.
"Early years at school, I was the kid who could draw just about anything. At age 10, in the club car of the Southern Pacific train from California back to Louisiana I drew the portraits of about 30 people and realized I had found a way to make money. I have always been amazed that with a pencil or a brush, I seem to be able to speak with out saying a word."
Later Archuleta decided to dedicate himself to art and attended the California College of Arts. His Professional career in art began with Portraiture in 1972, and was able to support his wife and two children.
Since 1976, Archuleta has devoted his work to rendering beautifully executed landscapes, particularly forest scenes. He is fascinated by nature and its myriad mysteries; the viewer senses that upon contemplating his paintings - a small deer is set amidst an immense forest, revealing the contrast both of scale and the animals fragility with that of the power and timelessness of the trees.
In explaining the variations in his style, Archuleta states "Some paintings are thin and wash-like, resembling a watercolor method; while others have a more dense laying of paint (impasto). In some, I have chosen to use a more impressionistic approach, while others, more refinement (detail). Sometimes the subject and/or the theme is best represented for me by a loose, deliberate interpretation - the mood seems best conveyed this way. In others, the message that nature is relating to me seems to have so many subtleties that many secondary areas also need to be paid special attention even though they may be in the shadows."
Juan Archuleta's artwork has been featured in many fine publications such as; Architectural Digest, Art of the West Magazine, South West Art, Connoisseur's Magazine, and U.S. Art Magazine. He was commissioned by the Yosemite Fund Foundation in 1987. His paintings are found in many private and corporate collections throughout the world.
